Привет! Our time in Moscow has come to an end. We’ve got a long layover at JFK.  Just dicking around on the internet til we fly out. I hope you all have enjoyed my blog. Пока.

Церковь Покрова на Нерли (Church of the Intercession on the Nerl).  This is a church we visited in Владимир.  It sits in the middle of a prairie and lies between two rivers, one being the Nerl.  You have to take a path about a mile to get there.  In the early spring, during the thaw, the two rivers overflow and the plain floods.  The church sits on an artificial mound that keeps the church from flooding.  Instead, the church becomes an island for a few weeks.  On the way back from the church, Kevin, Jordan and I opted to take a horse-drawn carriage driven by an nine-year-old girl. Enjoy.

A couple photos from Vladimir.  Sorry, none from Suzdal.  Check Kevin’s blog. He got some.

Weekend on the Golden Ring

Another busy weekend. Here’s a brief synopsis.

Friday night, most of our class went to the theater to see Лебединое озеро (Swan Lake).  I’m not normally a big ballet fan, but it’s one of Russia’s most famous ballets and the dancers were really really good.  It’s definitely worth seeing if you’re ever in Moscow.

I woke up around 5.30 in the morning the next day to head about an hour across town on the metro to get on a bus to a town about 4.5 hours outside Moscow called Владимир (Vladimir).  The town has about 350 000 people and was one of the first capitals of Russia after Киев (Kiev), in the modern day Ukraine.  It was founded in the ninth century and has some of the oldest existing buildings in Russia.  There we visited the Golden Gate and four different cathedrals.  One of the cathedrals, Успенский сабор (Assumption Cathedral) was built in the twelfth century and is one of the most famous cathedrals in Russia.

The next day, we woke up early again to head about forty minutes to another town called Суздал (Suzdal).  It’s a really beautiful town.  The strange this is that there are only about 11 000 inhabitants and over fifty churches.  You can see a church from just about everywhere.  We visited another old monastery, the wooden architecture museum and the old kremlin.  I also got to ride a horse.

Brief, but I’ll post a picture or two.

Darcy and Kevin at our favorite vegetarian restaurant, Авокадо (Avocado).  Just as soon as Spring has sprung, Russian restaurants get right on building outdoor seating.  They try to take advantage of the little time that Russia is actually warm.  If you get a cool day, however, you can always order a blanket бесплатно.  Enjoy.
